Set The Mood Festive Backdrop Go Green As the holidays near, the season for decorating begins. We're not just talking outdoor lights and inflatable character displays but bringing the festivities inside your home. Deck the halls, walls, fireplace and tabletops with holiday spirit that's inspired by both modern and traditional wintertime décor. Here are some ideas that are sure to spruce up your space. BY ABBY MONTANEZ This is the time of year when you want to pick a theme and run with it. Focus on creating an attention- grabbing backdrop by dressing up either your fireplace or mantle to act as the main attraction for guests. A fireplace can set the stage for your gathering space and a contemporary log holder or firewood rack can easily add a bit of finesse. A well-decorated mantel can also serve as a seasonal staple for parties. As far as the color scheme, you can go the traditional route by incorporating hues of red, white and green or make a statement by using shades of ivory, teal and black. Incorporating natural greenery is an easy way to highlight the more earthy elements of the season. Setting up a tree, hanging indoor wreaths or draping garland around doorways immediately ignites a sense of holiday spirit. Scattering branches, leaves and pinecones around are simple and natural ways to incorporate seasonal décor, while investing in a flower arrangement is another option for adorning your home. Consider the traditional poinsettia plant or a Christmas cactus. Aside from decorations, make sure that your home smells as inviting as it looks. Scented candles with notes of gingerbread, vanilla, cinnamon and orange will mimic fresh- baked goods or try something a bit more pungent like evergreen, smoke or cedar to evoke a wintery feel. Festive fragrances not only scent the space but also provide some warmth and a nice overall glow. For a special touch, put them inside of frosted glasses or invest in golden candle holders.
