The minimalist design of the upstairs interior, done with calming and cool white and gray colors, also works to hide the surprise hidden below. Lead interior designer of Plan Interiors, Tina Konstas, is responsible for creating the dichotomy of design and purpose offering an upper floor that takes advantage of and doesn't compete with the surrounding views and landscape, with the basement that packs a truly surprising punch. The idea for the lower floor was to recreate the NYC Polo Club while also providing a place for the family to fuel their passion for golf in the winter months. Highly polished oak flanks the floor, ceiling, and much of the walls, which are otherwise interspersed by painted walls in classic hunter green. Konstas chose an abundance of leather for the long curved banquet, club chairs, and bar stools giving the room plenty of space for lounging and conversation. A central feature is the custom-designed bar created by Ken Appel. The smooth lines and carved detail offer the perfect accompaniment for a classic club feel. In another nod to the classic, a "hidden" speakeasy is also part of the package, tucked away behind an easy-to- miss door. Even the powder room is meant to evoke a secretive feel as it is accessible through a door made to look like just an extension of the bookshelves. Since the owners' are active, just a lounge area was never going to be enough. D'Agostino came up with the idea to install a full golf simulator in the room as well, with a wall-sized screen and plenty of room to practice those swings. The added feature enhances the country club feel with a space that cries out for late- night card games, lively conversation, and perhaps a cocktail or two. With structures and landscaping complete, the sprawling estate now has a cohesive design for year-round activity that is beautiful, functional, and looks as though it has always been part of the property.
