e May Room on Governors Island is one of
Shantell Martin's most profound interactive
pieces. Held in a decommissioned chapel, e
May Room presents a series of installations
that create a space for freedom, contemplation,
and poetry. With a space enveloped in peace,
visitors are encouraged to take their shoes
off as they are guided through a maze, taking
the form of a simple drawing. Encompassing
the path are drawings of Martin's along with
scattered letters, done by hand, encapsulating
the sense of connection in the energy of the
room, and the installation itself. As viewers
continue down the path, they sink deeper and
deeper into a state of calm, revealing that the
scattered letters compose profound words and
phrases to refl ect on as they proceed.
