Golf may not be considered a defi ant sport today, but there was a time when it was. Dating back to the late 15th century, the citizens of Scotland loved the sport so much that the government banned it on three separate occasions. As the offi cial birthplace of golf but also a country in a state of constant war, playing golf interfered with the citizens' military training and archery practice. By decree of several Scottish kings, golf was to be condemned and stopped. Any citizen caught playing golf would be punished. Of course, once King James played a round himself, he was hooked.
