But truly, according to Patrick, the majority of his work takes place on a white sheet of paper. "90-95% of the work is to just listen to the client." As the client shares their ideas, visions, and dreams, Patrick is working on turning their thoughts into reality with his sketching. "For me, that has been the most effective way for getting the owner's engagement, listening to a client, understanding them, coming back to them with hand sketches and what you have understood and interpreted, I find most of my clients are blown away by it. Not too many designers are taught that method anymore." It is Patrick's ability to "create art in front of the client" that sets his distinctive style apart, right from the beginning of a project. ere are two different categories of yacht design, Patrick details, and that is new construction or a refit. e completion time on a project can vary due to these differences, but as a "general rule of thumb," Patrick estimates about a twenty-four to thirty month turn around process, with design comprising "anywhere from 15% to 25% of the duration of the entire build process." A prime example of a refit that took a little less time, ALTA is a 144- yacht that Patrick redesigned in only 161 days. Delivered to the client in early 2022, this sumptuous yacht highlights the impeccable vision and execution of Patrick Knowles. With intent behind every detail, it is easy to understand why Patrick Knowles Designs remains America's top yacht design firm. . VUE ON | LIFESTYLE 38 VUENJ.COM
