Born and raised in Prague, Czech Republic, artist Jan Kaláb always knew he "had a talent,
but didn't have a specific passion for creation." Instead, everything of beauty caught his
emerging artistic eye as he honed his natural ability at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Prague. While receiving his formal art training, Kaláb proceeded to spend the next
two decades cementing his name across the streets of his city. Aer making his
mark as a prolific and accomplished graffiti artist known as Cakes and with a
Masters degree in hand, Jan felt a new calling towards canvas. It was this
decision that propelled Jan Kaláb's name out from the historical streets of
Prague to an emerging global fanbase.
For Jan, "art is research[...]the process of research, like science." As an
abstract artist, this process of research involves "the universal code of
beauty," Kaláb's main source of inspiration. Be it from the natural world,
living creatures, or the cosmos, Jan Kaláb derives his vision from "how it all
works together," creating abstract, timeless pieces that are "as universal and
objective as possible."
Perhaps the most universal shape of all, the circle, serves as the basis for
most of Kaláb's creations. While shape and color are all central figures at
play in his art, the circle is the starting point for the organic forms Kaláb is
currently working on. He considers "the circle as an element and I build
everything out of a circle." Like the true visionary artist he is, Jan Kaláb seeks
