EARTH DAY THE FIRST EARTH DAY was celebrated in 1970 and initiated by Wisconsin Senator GAYLORD NELSON Approximately 1 BILLION PEOPLE participate in Earth Day globally each year, making it the LARGEST SECULAR OBSERVANCE in the world Approximately 75 % of waste is recyclable, yet only about 34% is actually recycled globally RECYCLING ONE ALUMINUM CAN saves enough energy to POWER A TV FOR 3 HOURS or RUN A 100- WATT LIGHT BULB FOR 20 HOURS It takes 450 YEARS for a SINGLE PLASTIC BOTTLE TO DECOMPOSE in the environment, but recycling them reduces this impact significantly Recycling a single ton of paper saves 17 TREES, 7,000 GALLONS OF WATER, & 4,000 KILOWATTS OF ENERGY 8 MILLION TONS OF PLASTIC waste end up in the oceans every year, equivalent to one garbage truck of waste per minute Humans generate nearly 5 POUNDS OF WASTE, PER PERSON, PER DAY 22 V U E LO N G I S L A N D .
