ftentimes people limit the
extent of domestic violence
to physical abuse, negating
emotional, psychological, economical, and sexual abuse that
are just as significant. Bruises often heal faster than emotional
wounds, and being a victim of domestic violence can negatively
affect the victim's health, leaving them helpless and vulnerable.
Nearly 20 people experience domestic violence per minute in
the United States. Today, there are many organizations whose
mission is to raise awareness of domestic violence and provide
services and refuge to its victims.
VUE had the opportunity to speak with Karen Arakelian,
founder of The Gloria Foundation. Arakelian founded the
organization in memory of her
late mother, Gloria Mazzuca
Intrabartolo, who was a victim of
domestic violence. The 501(c) 3 non-profit foundation was
designed to help provide resources to domestic violence
victims, local safe houses, and domestic violence organizations.
Arakelian wanted to give back to the community and began
thinking about a cause. "I just thought about what really
formed who I am. A lot of it was watching what my mother went
through with my father and not wanting to ever be dependent
on another person," Arakelian said.
Arakelian created Design Consign in 2014, a luxury
consignment shop whose proceeds go towards benefitting The
