A day spent enjoying the water, shopping, and luxuries of the Amalfi Coast is absolutely heavenly and unforgettable, but to truly appreciate the beauty of the region, understanding its history and culture is just as important and enjoyable. About an hour north of the Amalfi Coast, you will fi nd the archeological site of Pompeii, an ancient town that was destroyed in 79 CE by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. e town was buried in volcanic debris, leaving behind fragments of buildings and homes. Astonishingly, the debris perfectly preserved the remains, leaving molds that are displayed today. e town of Pompeii is frozen in time and extremely interesting to walk around and discover the way life was for people living at that time. Not too far from Pompeii is Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii, which is currently inactive. Visitors are able to hike to the top and see the view and vastness of the actual volcano. Each of the marvelous towns of the Amalfi Coast hold special adventures and a detailed history that paints the beautiful picture of this idyllic coast. Discovering the beauty of the terrain while embracing the aesthetic nature of the rustically inviting, pastel speckled towns is something truly unforgettable.
