In recent years, the amount of neurodevelopmental pediatricians is quickly decreasing with less than 800 board-certified developmental-behavioral doctors in the country and millions of children living with developmental or learning disorders. A lack of programs and clinical working settings for medical students paints the picture of how deep this issue runs. Each piece of equipment is customized to each child to enhance their strengths and live a more independent life. Children's Specialized Hospital has designed programs for children with life-altering, lifelong conditions including autoimmune disorders, heart disease, and diabetes. Focusing on the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of each patient, the Chronic Illness Management Program teaches children how to self-manage the disease they are living with, creating a more independent future. For children who are medically fragile and can not be cared for at home, Children's Specialized Hospital has two state-of- the-art long term care centers that are designed to offer therapies in a fun and nurturing setting. Each of the long term care centers has a full-time therapy dog on staff to make children feel welcomed, safe, and at home.
