BEAUTY CHARACTER A Look at NARS' Spring Line with François Nars was born a creative visionary. After coming to America from France, Nars decided to primp the beauty industry by premiering a new brand of twelve lipsticks to Barney's NYC in 1994, a line that showcased tremendous levels of texture, color, and purity. His invention of the the Multi Stick, taking one product and using it three different ways to replace other staple makeup products, is just one of his trademarks. Representing his work in classic perfectionist style, Nars then took full reign of the creative, from hand-picking the models to doing his own photography. This would kick off his first ever advertising campaign (which eventually debuted in 1996). Remaining true to his roots as an artist and photographer, he continues to shoot all of the NARS advertising campaigns today. It was the inception of this campaign and his creative direction that would launch NARS into the luxury makeup and skincare brand that it is today. Nars states that makeup is not a mask, rather a woman's individuality should be highlighted as "beauty with character." The models he chooses to shoot serve a purpose, representing strength with strong facial features and edge. By featuring different ethnicities and diversifying from the norm, Nars has created his own standard of beauty, one which will never be perceived as unattainable or fake. Nars' artistic vision shines through in his products.
