During our trip, it was hard to understand why this version Mexico, a natural wonder some will say, has remained such a well-kept secret even with big-name stars making an appearance every now and then. After returning, I now believe it's because when people come to visit La Paz, they often never leave. "I've travelled a lot and I can tell you, in life, it's easy to lose yourself. But in La Paz, there's some sort of anchor. There is something very grounding about being here," Curtiss explained as we sat down to dinner one evening. Growing up in England, Curtiss came from humble beginnings, but would later find himself as part of a top trading company in the U.K. It was only then in the late '90s and through his son, James, that Curtiss stumbled upon La Paz. James had set off to Mexico to open up a diving school and it wasn't until nearly two years later that Curtiss decided to join him, after realizing that his son wasn't coming home. His trip lasted for nine days and that's all the time it took for Curtiss to understand the irresistible charm of this place. For me, only a few hours had passed before I was able to comprehend the lure of the land, a town where the nightly activities include watching the sunset over the Malecon, a five kilometer waterfront walkway, and sitting outside to listen to the Coromuel winds.
