dipping through tank traps, managing steep descents and balancing on three, sometimes even two wheels. There were even instances where I couldn't see over my own hood, but there was never any reason to fret or panic (even when it felt like we were an inch from tipping on our side). Between the brand's off-roading tech and the guidance of my instructor, things went smoothly, even when it was bumpy. Perhaps the most valuable part about having Young in the passenger's seat— aside from her expansive knowledge about the brand and vehicle—were the skills and techniques she taught me when confronted with each obstacle: how to handle tight (and often treacherous) approach angles, when to use low range, and when to let go and let Land Rover's tech take control. When heading down some seriously steep bluffs, Hill Descent Control is the tech you'll lean on the most. At the top of my very first descent, Young gave me a firm nod and said, "take your foot off the brake completely." You can imagine my trepidation at the top of what looked nothing short of a vertical limit. That's where Hill Descent Control kicks in, allowing for a smooth and controlled crawl down on even the harshest terrain without so much as a tap on the brake or accelerator. When activated, the SUV will begin down the decline using the ABS brake system to control each wheel's speed, automatically applying brakes to slow the SUV down as it descends. By the time the session came to an end—and a thrilling conclusion preceded by an off-road and on-road campaign to the top of Mount Equinox—I left feeling confident enough to tackle things on my own (with of course, the assistance of the Land Rover tech). The Land Rover Experience Driving Center is more than just an outdoor classroom that teaches you how to drive a high- end SUV, it's a step-by-step, hands-on instructional training program that can take you from completely clueless to maneuvering through some seemingly impossible obstructions. If you've ever been curious about getting behind the wheel and testing the limits of these vehicles, you can spend the day (or several) at the Land Rover Experience Driving Center in Manchester, VT. The Experience Center is one of three—others include locations in North Carolina and California which all offer half- or full-day lessons. Whether you're a novice or an off- roading pro, you'll build the tenacity and confidence required to overcome even the most perilous obstacles. 2 0 1 - 8 6 9 - 2 2 7 2 7 2 01 R i ve r R d , N o r t h B e rg e n , N J 0 7 0 4 7 For a seriously clean car.
