The husband-and-wife duo have been featured in Elle Decor, the Luxe Gold List 2019, and more, for their skill in giving timeless designs a modern feel. Carrier and Company have a licensed collaboration with Loloi called the Carrier and Company x Loloi collection, and we got to hear their thoughts about how just one rug can affect a house's overall design and atmosphere. 1. How would you describe your decorating style? We often use the title of our book, Positively Chic, which describes us as elevated and accessible, to describe our decorating style. We create rooms that are a confident mix of timeless and contemporary design, both familiar and fresh at once. 2 . For someone who is new to pic king out r ugs and interior de sign , is there an overall method you would recommend , or doe s it depend more on the individual? The first thing to consider is the scale and size of the rug. Is the room very large or long? A smaller scaled area rug can help to define a seating area and create a room within a room. Conversely, a large, room size rug can visually expand the space and create graciousness. 1. Why should the rug be your first consideration when planning a room's decor? The rug literally grounds the room. A good rug can set the tone for the décor and influence how you style and furnish the rest of the space. It can also serve as the palette for the room's color scheme, and the size of the rug helps define the dimensions of the space. 2. How have you seen rug designs, materials , and construction changing throughout the years? Rug making is such an ancient practice, but we have seen and worked with incredible new techniques in the years, especially in printed construction. 3 . The only decorating practice we adhere to is striving for the thoughtfully layered home. We want each room to have soul, to be intentional, and to feel lived in and livable. 4. What is one piece o f advice you think everyone should know when buying and installing a rug for the first time? Think of the end use! Is this a room with heavy foot traffic or do you have little chil- dren or pets? That will help you determine the construction best for the space. And go big! So often we see rooms with rugs that are too small, making the footprint seem smaller. 5. How can first-time buyers make sure their rugs are eye-catching, but also cohesive with their room's design?
